Voting Question: Is this a pyramid scam?

A good friend of mine recently asked me to join this system that sells a product called MonaVie. It’s an Acai juice that is supposed to yield positive health benefits. My friend (I trust him) swears by it and is up in arms about getting me on board, but I am hesitant. When I asked how to market or sell the product, he told me not to worry about selling anything, that I was going to buy 2 cases/month and do whatever I want with it, but what I needed to do (in order to make money) was sign people up on the same system and bring them to the meeting with me.
I am well aware of how a pyramid scam works and this sounds a lot like one, but I trust this friend of mine, also the company swears that it IS NOT a pyramid, and that they submit documentation to the Federal Government proving that they are not. That’s where I am confused, why would they want me to sign people up (henceforth making me MORE money) rather than sell their product??
Also, should I do this? Or is it just another scam??
