“And why are you applying here?”
“What was that?”
“I asked why you were applying.”
“Oh.” Audrey breathed slowly, forcing her lips to not spill the real reason she had scribbled an application to Green Oaks Nursing Home-she really wanted the charity merit on her soon-to-be submitted high school application. She needed to be able to muster up some fake passion about how she “loved volunteering,” and “the joy you get from helping others,” and “they all just have such interesting life stories!” She had gotten an A in Drama after all. Well, Drama class wasn’t graded, but Audrey was pretty sure her performance would’ve won her an A.
“I feel like my life needs some…” Audrey paused to find the words. “Meaning?”
“Your life needs meaning?” Her interviewer Mrs. Wilbur peered over her thin rimmed glasses whilst simultaneously adjusting them.
“Well, I mean, my life has meaning, I just feel like I need to contribute. And I’ve always enjoyed listening to my grandparents tell stories.” She was lying. Audrey had never met one set of grandparents, and the others spent most of their family time making comments on Audrey’s weight. For this she resented them. She could never remember them tell a single story. The most lengthy time they had talked to her was when her grandmother had heard about a new acai berry diet.
“M-hm. Yes.” Mrs. Wilbur’s pen moved quickly across the paper.“Do you have any experience?”
“Um…I volunteered at a…” Audrey glanced nervously around the room. She had no experience, and she knew she couldn’t get this volunteer position without some. She needed this for her application. Suddenly the thoughts of SSAT’s, grades….it all began to whiz through her mind. She needed this, she needed this. She could lie. With a last desperate look, she saw the title on Mrs. Wilbur’s desk, White Walls, The Story Of A Blind Boy.
“Blind Institute. I volunteered there. Amazing experience, I must say.”
Suddenly Mrs. Wilbur looked interested.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me about it. What did you do there?”
“Oh, I talked with the blind, helped set up meals, clean up the place. I was mostly a social volunteer though.”
Mrs. Wilbur was nodding, and smiling.
“You know, I actually may have the perfect job for you.”
Audrey grinned. “Great, because I’d be so excited to volunteer here.”
“It’d be social volunteer work. I just have to work through a few details, nothing serious, just shifts and schedules. You can start next week.”
Audrey was beaming. She finally felt the sweet cloak of satisfaction enthrall her, and she inhaled it warmly, soaking in the fulfillment.
